Welcome, TIME is unforgiving. It waits for no-one. Watching the clock, hoping the hands stand still, is fruitless. We live and operate in a world which moves at a frenetic pace and where the only real constant is change. The future belongs to those who plan, not for those who wait for the bus, hoping to get a lift. At Oaklands Stud we have been meticulous in plotting a course to the top and while there is still much to do and much to learn we remain as committed as ever to pursuing excellence in every facet of the thoroughbred breeding industry. We are very protective of our reputation as a leader in this business and are proud of having produced horses of the highest calibre but this only encourages us to continually seek to do better. IN 2009-10 we will stand the Magic Millions and Ascot Vale Stakes winner Ferocity, Zabeel’s superbly built half-brother Break The Vault, Nureyev’s Group 1 placed son Pure Theatre, the English and Hong Kong victor Chateau Istana and the electrifying fast All Bar One. In this newsletter we will focus on FEROCITY and BREAK THE VAULT but remember the latest advertisements for all of our stallions are available on this website. If I can assist further please contact me.

FEROCITY (Lion Hunter-Chiara by Last Tycoon (Ire)) Superb pedigree, stunning looks, ability FEROCITY’S sire Lion Hunter was one of the best sire sons of the great Danehill. Lion Hunter collected a string of accolades throughout his stallion career before an early death with his stock including the Group 1 winners Lovely Jubly and Gold Edition and the Group 1 placegetters Rampant Lion, Midnight City, Upilio, Barbaricus, Any Suggestion and Street Smart. Ferocity’s female line has also been highly successful with his sisters Leone Chiara and Chinchilla Rose winning at stakes level. Ferocity was also a precocious racehorse and his performances were more than matched by his striking good looks and near faultless conformation. Oaklands Stud principal Neville Stewart was delighted to have acquired Ferocity. Stewart regards Ferocity as the perfect substitute for Lion Hunter, saying Ferocity carried all the necessary prerequisites to succeed in the stallion barn. “He comes from a proven sire line through Lion Hunter, Danehill, Danzig and Northern Dancer,” Stewart said. “I wanted a pedigree with some Star Kingdom influence – and in his pedigree he has Ritmar who was a very good filly by Star Kingdom.” Ritmar won the 1959 VRC Lightning as a two-year-old, and was sold to the US where among her foals was the New Zealand sire Diplomatic Star, sire of Ferocity’s grand-dam E’toile d’Or. “But just as importantly, Ferocity was an exceptional racehorse.” Stewart said. Ferocity contested 10 races, six of which were stakes events, up to 1400 metres, finishing with three victories (Adelaide Magic Millions, Ascot Vale Stakes G2, VRC Festive Season) and four placings including a third in the Victorian Racing Club Sires Produce Stakes G2 for track earnings of $656,500. He collected prizemoney in 80 percent of his outings.” Stewart said. Ferocity’s racetrack popularity was transferred to the breeding barn where he has covered 382 mares in his first three seasons. “His yearlings have been in demand in the sale ring and I have heard positive reports from both New South Wales and Queensland trainers that they have broken in well. I am looking forward to seeing his progeny at the racetrack this year. “There isn’t a doubt in my mind Ferocity will be just as good as his sire, perhaps even better,” Stewart concluded. FEROCITY’S service fee for 2009-10 is $11,000 inc GST. FEROCITY was retired to stud in 2006 and he has covered 382 mares in his first three seasons. His yearlings have been in demand in the sale ring and we are looking forward to seeing his first crop at the races this year.

BREAK THE VAULT (Redoute’s Choice-Lady Giselle-Nureyev) by a champion out of a champion BREAK THE VAULT comes from a prodigious sire line with his grand-sire Danehill leaving numerous Group 1 runners such as Golden Slipper heroes Flying Spur and Danzero. His own sire Redoute’s Choice has done likewise siring 14 Group 1 winners including his daughters Miss Finland and Samantha Miss. Redoute’s Choice was the head of his own class with multiple Group 1 successes including the Blue Diamond Stakes and Caulfield Guineas. Break The Vault, unbeaten in his first four starts including a stakes event on Melbourne Cup day in 2005, is one of the headline acts on the stallion roster at Oaklands Stud, which is also home to speed influences All Bar One, Ferocity, Chateau Istana and the royally bred Pure Theatre. Break The Vault appeared bound for Group 1 glory before injury stopped him, according to former trainer John Hawkes who believed the entire possessed all the prerequisites to be a contender at the highest level. Oaklands Stud was thrilled to secure Break The Vault for stud duties. Principal Neville Stewart said Break The Vault "ticked all the right boxes" with an inviting pedigree, stout body and a willing attitude. "He was a brave and impressive racehorse," Stewart said. "He showed real talent from the first time he stepped out on to a racetrack and John Hawkes is certain Break The Vault would have gone all the way to the top but for the injury which ended his racing career. "I haven't a single doubt Break The Vault will measure up as a stallion. He is a genuine blueblood with the Northern Dancer-Nureyev cross and his dam has produced a galaxy of stars.” Break The Vault has been popular with broodmare owners. In his first season he covered 135 mares and is represented by 96 live offspring, an 89.7 percent foal to cover ratio. He has also been high on the shopping list of astute yearling and weanling buyers such as Sydney-based Dynamic Syndications, which went to $25,000 to buy Crack A Smile, a Break The Vault colt from Sly Smile. The Gollan Racing Trust also went to $20,000 to snare a Break The Vault half-brother to city winner Temple of Boom from Temple Top. Interestingly a Break The Vault half-brother from Rumba On Ice scored a very impressive win in Singapore recently. Alabama (Iglesia-Rumba On Ice) clocked 1min.10secs for the Class 4 1200 metre race. He won by 2 ¼ lengths pulling away and landed some sizeable bets. He is trained by Stephen Burridge, a former Australian jockey and now a trainer in Singapore. Successful Toowoomba trainer Mark Webb is delighted to have some Break The Vault youngsters on his books. "They work along nicely," Webb said. "It is only early days at the moment but the Break The Vault's I have here have all broken in nicely and are good movers on the track." BREAK THE VAULT’s service fee for 2009-10 is $6,600 incl GST. BREAK THE VAULT’s oldest progeny will race as two-year-olds this season.
