ASTUTE shoppers will almost certainly inspect the Oaklands Stud draft at the Magic Millions weanling auction at the Gold Coast on May 27 and 28.
Oaklands will send 33 weanlings to the sale.
There will be plenty of focus on the horses from Oaklands Stud given the outcomes of the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn carnival.
Oaklands Stud bred and sold Shoot Out (High Chaparall-Pentamerous), which has been a revelation on the track. At his second start last year he won the Group 2 Queensland Turf Club Sires Produce Stakes and as a three-year-old he has gone on with the job to win the AJC Derby (2400m) and Randwick Guineas (1600m), both of which carry Group 1 status.
Oakland Stud’s resident sires Ferocity (Lion Hunter-Chiara-Last Tycoon Ire), Break The Vault (Redoute’s Choice-Eight Carat-Nureyev USA), All Bar One (Hennessey-Max’s Sister-Phone Trick USA), Chateau Istana (photographed) (Grand Lodge GB-Miss Queen-Miswaki)) and former resident sire Pure Theatre (Nureyev USA-A Goodlookin' Broad USA-Broad Brush USA) are responsible for the majority of its draft.
Other stallions represented in the Oaklands Stud draft are the group 1 performers Hotel Grand, Elusive Quality and Easy Rocking.
Ferocity, the Adelaide Magic Millions and Ascot Vale Stakes winner, has done well with his first crop. His oldest progeny are two-year-olds and his sons Sticksy, Mieko’s Diamond, Silverton, Cavaliered and Gentle Giant have been flying the flag with good city and provincial efforts.
Six weanlings by Ferocity will be available for sale including lot 466 a full brother to Brisbane placegetter Gentle Giant out of the multiple group placed mare Decent Girl.
Fillies by Chateau Istana listed as Lots 492 and 539 should demand plenty of interest.
The former is a chestnut from the winning Semipalatinsk mare Forever Glory, whose earlier progeny include the TJ Smith (G1) placed Tripitz.
Trained by Mark Webb, Tripitz (by Iglesia) has maintained good form as an older horse and has taken his speed to a distance, finishing just behind the placegetters in the 2010 Toowoomba Cup over 2050m.
Lot 539 is also a chestnut from the highly talented Mooralana (Irgun USA-Out Opal Flash-Rangong).
Mooralana won twice as a juvenile including an Eagle Farm two-year-old and her family includes Karaman, winner of the AJC Sires Produce and a placegetter in the Victoria Derby.
The late Geoff Murphy had a good opinion of Urbane, a relative to the All Bar One-Honour Role-Honour And Glory filly Oaklands Stud will sell as Lot 640.
Murphy brought Urbane to Brisbane for the 1986 winter carnival after the colt had shown promise to tin a prelude of the Blue Diamond.
Urbane delivered on Stradbroke Day. Ridden by Gary Willetts, Urbane powered home to win narrowly in good company, as Murphy predicted.
Urbane is from the Habitat mare Habania, the grand dam of the All Bar One filly, which is also related to PJ Bell Handicap winner Espurante and the G1 placed Tootsie (Wellington Telegraph Handicap).
Elusive Quality, the sire of Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, is also the dad of the Lady Damosel colt Oaklands Stud will sell as agent.
Listed as Lot 282, the bay colt was an October 4 foal and he boasts a family tree sprinkled with black type with such notable performers as Toil ($584,000 and the Feehan Stakes), Star Of Luis (fourth in the Pago Pago), Gold Forever and Senor Zorro (third in the New Zealand Sty Leger).
Break The Vault’s well connected daughter from Grey Sneakers (Lot 637) is also likely to take the eye of buyers. Grey Sneakers, a three times winner on the track, is a proven producer with her Last Tycoon son Dragon And Gold winning in Hong Kong and her Tsuimai filly Sneaky Tsu has ton up to 1500m in Melbourne.
Break The Vault is a from a celebrated family.
His half-brother Zabeel has left a staggering number of individual G1 winners and his staying son Zavite has been in stellar form this year. As well Break The Vault is a son of Redoute’s Choice, the grand sire of the 2010 Golden Slipper Crystal Lily.
