FORMER Oaklands Stud stallion Iglesia might have a Queensland Derby contender.
His three-year-old son Sanderson, from the Fuji Kiseki mare Princess Tatsuita, will advance to the Grand Prix Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday week before tackling the Queensland Derby (2400m) there in early June.
The Kelly Doughty stable was delighted when Sanderson captured a third placing in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2020m) at Doomben on May 15.
Ridden by Jason Holder, Sanderson worked home worst from mid-field at the top of the straight to get within two lengths of protest winner The Hombre.
The Hombre landed victory from Teemar yet Sanderson was rated desperately unlucky.
Doughty said the run was an ideal trial for the Derby and her husband Gary, a former jockey and part-owner of Sanderson, believed the Classic trip was tailor made for the three-year-old.
“He got to the line better than any other in the race and there is no doubt in our minds he will run out the trip in the Derby,” Gary Doughty said.
Sanderson’s Derby execution commenced on May 1 at Eagle Farm when he scored a thrilling Group 3 victory in the Gunsynd Classic over 1600m.
Sanderson’s sire Iglesia (Last Tycoon-Yodells-Marscay) was renowned as a sprinter and most of his progeny have done likewise.
However Iglesia’s half-brother Yippyio was a Brisbane Cup winner and Melbourne Cup placegetter.
