OAKLANDS Stud principal Neville Stewart has offered and sold hundreds of winners from the Gold Coast Magic Millions sales ring including Shoot Out winner of the this season’s G1 AJC Derby.
Shoot Out (High Chaparral Ire-Pentamerous-Pentire) is raced by Graham and Lindy Huddy and is likely to be named Australia’s Champion 3YO Stayer for 2009-10. He has earned prizemoney in excess of $1.34 million which is a great return on a horse that the stud sold for only $15,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions.
While Shoot Out is spelling in readiness for the spring carnivals, Oaklands Stud has a chance to capture a second classic this year with Sanderson in the G1 Queensland Derby on June 12.
Sanderson (3g Iglesia - Princess Tatsuta by Fuji Kiseki) scored a thrilling G3 victory in the Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm on May 1 and trainer Kelly Doughty is confident the lightly-raced gelding can make the grade.
“I always thought he would make into a Derby horse and he's a step closer now,” Doughty said.
“I gave him two lead-up runs so he would be ready for the mile.”
Sanderson was a bargain-basement $3,000 buy from the Oaklands consignment at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Summer Sale. He was bred by Neville and Kaylene’s Stewart’s son Alex who was tragically killed in an accident almost 12 months ago.
Sanderson’s next lead-up to the Queensland Derby will be in the Rough Habit Plate (2020m) at Doomben on May 15.
Oaklands sire Ferocity has covered the dams of Shoot Out and Sanderson in the last two years. He has two younger half-sisters to the AJC Derby winner and the yearling made $160,000 when sold to the Huddy’s at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
Sanderson’s dam Princess Tatsuta has a two-year-old gelding named Royal Lion and a yearling filly that has been retained by Oaklands Stud.
Ferocity’s first crop are up and running and Gold Coast filly Vexed (x My Millennium) increased his individual winner tally to four when she scored on debut at Ipswich last week.
Ferocity’s half-sister to Shoot Out has been his most expensive yearling to date although he did have another filly change hands for six figures at the Yarradale Stud yearling sale late in April. The Ferocity - City Living youngster made $120,000 to the bid of leading Perth trainer Lindsey Smith. She is a half-sister to WA stakes winners Diamond Dash (Hennessy) and Metro Miss (Xaar).
Another of Oaklands Stud’s resident stallions, Break The Vault (photographed) (Redoute’s Choice-Lady Giselle-Nureyev) has been in the spotlight recently.
His son Been Broke Before (x Auchtric-Antic Boy) gave the stallion his second winner. Been Broke Before’s win followed a second placing at his first start earlier this month, also at Townsville.
Break The Vault’s first winning progeny was Manilla-based son Cold Hearted (x Princess Bree-Music Prince).
ASTUTE shoppers will almost certainly inspect the Oaklands Stud draft at the Magic Millions weanling auction at the Gold Coast on May 27 and 28.
Oaklands will be sending 33 weanlings to the sale.
