FIRST WINNER TO FEROCITY

7/12/2009
A YOUNGSTER bred to be a headliner has broken the ice for Oaklands stud stallion Ferocity.
Sticksy has become the first of Ferocity’s progeny to win on race day after capturing the Cotton Building Company QTIS /QTIS 600 2YO Maiden Plate 1000 metres at Caloundra’s Sunshine Coast on December 6.
Ridden by Ric McMahon for Cooroy trainer Murray Thompson, Sticksy finished a shade too strongly for rivals to win on debut.
Sticksy (pictured), named for one of the partners in the youngster, beat Craiglea Gee Tee and Lucy Louise.
Seven people race Sticksy including his breeder Peter Lavin and Lavin’s best mate  Mark Thompson who is nicknamed ‘Sticksy’.
Lavin bred Sticksy after putting his Strategic mare Beesem to the Ascot Vales Stakes winning Ferocity (Lion Hunter-Chiara-Last Tycoon) in the greys first season at stud.
Murray Thompson admitted connections were impressed with the courage and strength of Sticksy.
“Sticksy is really tough, he never gives up and we are all stoked with him.
I knew he would ‘really blow up’ after the race and he did.  He should gain a lot of improvement following this win.” Murray Thompson said.
The stable is looking at running Sticksy again on December 19 in one of the QTIS/QTIS 600 bonus races at the Brisbane Racing Club’s Doomben track and then to the $2m BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Sticksy has an interesting pedigree.
He hails from one of the Studbook's best broodmare families.
Sticksy's dam Beesem is by the Australian stakes winning Strategic (Zeditive-Sudden Impulse-Luskin Star) from Maroof’s winning daughter Our Evening Star.
Our Evening Star’s grand-dam is Diamond Lover, herself a group 1 performer and dam of the exceptional Don Eduardo and Tristalove.
The family also includes other superstars Octagonal, Danewin, Kaapstad, Kempinsky, Tristalove, Viking Ruler and De Beers on the dam side. As well Beesem’s family includes Todman, Sir Tristram, Northern Dancer and Showdown in her family tree.
Ferocity is also extremely well related with his sisters Leone Chiara and Chinchilla Rose winning at stakes level while his sire Lion Hunter (Danehill-Pure Of Heart-Godswalk) has left such sprinting stars at Gold Edition and Lovely Jubly and the solid middle distance campaigner Rampant Lion.
Ferocity stands at Oaklands Stud at $11,000 including GST service fee.
