Ferocity

ferocityOne of Lion Hunter’s most accomplished sons, has arrived at Oaklands Stud to take up where his dad left off.
The precocious Lion Hunter became a revelation for Queensland breeding when he retired to Oaklands Stud in the late 90s. His first crop yielded the high grade dual G1 winner Lovely Jubly, whose string of key victories included the Magic Millions and TJ Smith Classic.
Lion Hunter, however, died in 2004.
But not before cutting an indelible mark with his offspring delivering sires championships in each subsequent season since 2001.

Oaklands Stud principal Neville Stewart is delighted to have acquired Ferocity with the help of Sheriff Iskander of Iskander Racing and other clients.
Stewart regards Ferocity as the perfect substitute for his deceased sire, saying Ferocity carries all the necessary prerequisites to succeed in the stallion barn.

“He comes from a proven sire line through Lion Hunter, Danehill, Danzig and Northern Dancer,” Stewart said.

“I wanted a pedigree with some Star Kingdom influence – and in his pedigree he has Ritmar who was a very good filly by Star Kingdom.”

Ritmar won the 1959 VRC Lightning as a two-year-old, and was sold to the US where among her foals was the New Zealand sire Diplomatic Star, sire of Ferocity’s grand-dam.

“But just as importantly, Ferocity was an exceptional racehorse,” Stewart said.
He contested 10 races, six of which were stakes races, up to 1400 metres, finishing with three victories (Adelaide Magic Millions; G2, Ascot Vale Stakes; VRC Festive Season) and four placings including 3rd VRC Sires’ Produce S.
(G2) for track earnings of $656,500. He collected prizemoney in 80 percent of his outings.

“There isn’t a doubt in my mind Ferocity will be just as good as his sire, perhaps even better,”

Stewart added.
Ferocity was good enough to claim the Adelaide Magic Millions and ran third in the time honoured Victoria Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) as a two-year-old before taking a break from training.
When he won the Group 2 Ascot Vale Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in the spring, he eclipsed a virtual Golden Slipper field leaving the likes of Fashions Afield and Written Tycoon in his wake.
He won the Ascot Vale Stakes by three-quarters of a length in near record time (1minute 8.35 seconds) with a final 600m race sectional of 33.14 seconds.

Ferocity has been retired from racing in the peak of condition and commenced stud duties in 2006-07.
His service fee for 2008-09 is $11,000 incl GST.
